Being Human
WHY HUMANITIES?!
Why Humanities?
This is a "question" which frequently comes across people when there are students like me who love Humanities more than anything else. Why is the youth facing this question? Is the stream not worth it? Don't we have the right to choose our careers? Why isn't the stream placed parallel to Science and Commerce?
Believe me, I have faced these questions from the very second I chose to pursue Humanities. Being a class topper, everybody including my parents, teachers, relatives, friends and myself had the preconception that "Science" stream is the best for me. I was so sure that I will be studying Science and Mathematics in my high school period. But I realised that my decision was primarily based on the social conditioning my mind had gone through all these years. My father is a doctor, so from childhood itself I was seen as a student taking up Science. People said that if you score good, you become an engineer or a doctor. So there I was. Ready to walk the path others had made which was true according to them. But as an independent girl, I wanted to make the trail I was going to follow myself. I wanted to set an example for everybody. For that I needed to do something new, something which was my passion, my love. And I found it. Humanities.
I have come to know a lot about this stream till now and I say this stream is wonderful for any student to explore. You get endless opportunities here. Sky is the limit. Humanities is made from the word 'human'. And before learning how to start an electric motor or to invent a drug (no offence to anyone), I believe in the present world of mistrust, it is more important to learn to be a human. This stream is for those who connect with themselves, who see service to others more important than making money, who know what it is to be a human.
Even when my school discontinued Humanities this very year during the crucial time of stream selection, along with limited opportunities in my city, I will continue to study what I want because I have that courage to fight against the society and those wrong established norms. I have that fire within to prove everyone wrong. I believe in myself. And so you should too.
This is for all those who have faced criticism. Always follow your heart. Never give up on yourself.
A sad story always has a happy ending.
